Jerusalem, 25 June, 2026 (TPS-IL) — A new scientific review states that nicotine pouches, a relatively new product, are particularly toxic to the central nervous system and contain carcinogenic substances; although, they are perceived as a “safe” alternative to smoking.

The Israeli Cancer Society reports that 5% of young Israelis use them and that they are marketed, among other things, to Children.

It warns that the tobacco and nicotine industry is “targeting its marketing to children and teenagers, using sweet and fruity flavors.”

An FDA and CDC review found that some pouches contain very high nicotine concentrations of up to 50 mg per pouch. (It should be noted that a single regular cigarette contains an average of 10 to 12 milligrams of nicotine.)

The Cancer Society Notes that nicotine is rapidly absorbed into the brain, affects the decision-making system and emotional regulation, and increases the risk of addiction, especially during adolescence when the brain is still developing.
